he firm began sometime around the 1870’s by Ben Broezel, who was a barber by trade and also did the undertaking for the community. He was joined later by John Ensch and they also operated a furniture store and the funeral business, known as Broezel & Ensch. In 1928 Clifford A. Crandall I moved his family to Mauston and became the partner of John Ensch and operated the business as Ensch & Crandall. Clifford purchased the full business shares and later became Crandall & Sons. During this period of time the business operated as both a funeral & furniture business. Funerals were held in area churches and the home of the families they served. Clifford was joined by his sons Les, Jim and Don. During World War II Clifford purchased the present location and funerals in the community began be held at a funeral home and churches. Following the war Clifford again was joined by his sons in the operation of the business which now included furniture, carpeting, flooring and LP Gas and the funeral business. James C. Crandall purchased the business from his father in 1961 and in 1963 sold the furniture portion of the business and continued the funeral business now know as Crandall Funeral Home. In 1987 Jim retired and sold the business to Andy and Chuck and they have operated the business since 1987.
